FAQ
From reservations to what to bring on the day, here is what our guests ask us most. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please feel free to contact your chosen studio directly.
Booking & Reservations
Do I need a reservation?
Reservations are generally required, though same-day bookings may be possible if space allows. During weekends, holidays and peak travel seasons, we recommend booking well in advance.
How far in advance can I book?
Reservations can be made up to three months ahead of your visit.
Is there a cancellation fee?
Cancelling the day before your appointment incurs a 50% fee, and cancelling on the day of your appointment incurs a 100% fee.
Can I change my plan on the day?
It is often possible, but not guaranteed, as it depends on the schedule for that day. If you would like to change your plan, please contact the studio ahead of time so staff can prepare.
Preparation & What to Bring
What do I need to bring?
Studios provide everything you will need for your transformation — undergarments, tabi socks, makeup remover, basic skincare, towels and a hairdryer. Just bring your own makeup for afterward. Guests taking a maiko or oiran experience who wear hard contact lenses should also bring a lens case, as lenses are removed during makeup application.
What should I wear, and can I arrive with makeup on?
Come as you normally would. Your everyday clothing is fine, and arriving with your usual makeup on is no problem at all.
Can I bring my own accessories?
For plans with no specified limit, you may bring up to three items of your own. If you would like to use your own accessories, please let the studio know in advance.
How do studios handle hygiene during makeup application?
Hygiene is taken seriously at every step. Staff sanitize their hands before each makeup application, and every guest receives a fresh foundation sponge along with freshly washed puffs and brushes. Liquid foundation and lip products are portioned out with a spatula rather than used directly from the container, mascara is applied with a disposable brush tip, and false eyelashes are brand new for every guest and discarded afterward.
Visiting & Access
Is there parking?
Parking varies by studio — some do not have a dedicated lot but are close to public parking areas. Please check the Access section of your chosen studio's page, and allow extra time during peak seasons.
Can I visit alone?
Of course — many guests visit solo, so please do not hesitate to book on your own.
Can large groups be accommodated?
Yes, though larger groups are sometimes split into smaller parties, since wait times for photography increase with group size.
Is there somewhere for my companion to wait?
Yes, companions are welcome to wait in the studio's reception area. Please note that studios are generally only able to accommodate one companion per guest, and in some cases waiting guests cannot be accepted. As sessions typically run over two hours, we recommend companions explore the surrounding area rather than wait the whole time.
Can I take part while pregnant?
As a precaution, it is not generally recommended. If you would still like to take part, please contact the studio directly so staff can discuss it with you.
Payment & Photo Usage
What payment methods do you accept?
Most studios accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB and UnionPay credit cards, as well as PayPay and Alipay for QR code payments. Please check your chosen studio's Access section for details.
Can I use my photos commercially?
Copyright of your photography remains with the studio. Images you purchase are yours to enjoy freely for personal, non-commercial use. Commercial use requires prior application and a separate licensing fee — please contact the studio in advance if you are interested.
